McMahon Hussein Correspondence
British High Commissier Henry McMahon promised Sharif Hussein, the ruler of the Muslim holy city of Mecca, that Britain would grant independence to most Arab areas, which was disagreed over the borders. -
The Balfour Declaration
The British Forgein Minister Arthur Balfour promised to creat a Jewish homeland in Israel. -
British Mandate for Palestine
The Leaguge of Nations divided Ottoman Empire between France and Britain.Israel was giving to Britain and some land were giving to the Jews as their homeland. -
The Holocaust and World War II
Nazi Germany started to attack and conquer most of Europe. Then Hitler, the leader of the Nazi's started to kill all the Jews. This resulted in 6 million Jews dead. Arter this, the pressured to create a Jewish state increased. -
UM Partition Plan
In 1947, the tension between Arab, Jews and the British. The UN General Assembly voted to partition the Palestine Mandate into an Arab and Jewish state. The Jewish reluctantly accepted but the Arabs in the land rejected it and increased attacks on Jews. -
1948 War
Arab armies from Egypt, Jordan,etc... attacked the new state. At the end , they got 20% more land than the UN partition alloted. Jordan captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and Egypt captured the Gaza Strip. Later killing all Jews in the area. -
Establishment of the PLO
The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) was formed with the aim od destroying Israel and creating a Palestine state in its place. -
Settlement Construction Begins
The Israeli goverment aproved settlements built on the land that was captured in the 1967 War. The first settlement were intended to act as security outposts. They were also built on the sites of Jewish villages for the negotions of peace. -
Six-Day War
Egypt blocked Israeli shipping lanes in the Red Sea. Israel cauptured the Sanai and the Gaza Strip from Egypt, the Golah Heights from Syria and the West Bank from Jordan including East Jerusalem. -
The War Of Attrittion
Israel maintained that Jerusalem would remain a unified city and gained land from Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. Eight Arab head of state and adopted the "3 NOs" policy -- no peace, recognition and negotions with Israel and started attacking. -
October War/ Yom Kippur War
Egypt and Syria attacked Israel on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year. After Arab military succes, the Israelis managed to push back the attack. Many Iaraelis felt that the heartland of Israel could have been overrun if not for the time it took the invading forces to move through the West Bank, etc. -
Camp David Accords
Menachem Begin of Israel and Anwar al-Sadat of Egypt signed agreement in Camp David. The American-sponsored talks paved the way to peace treaty signed in 1979. -
Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty
Egypt became the first Arab country to recoginze and enter into a peace treaty with Israel. The president realized that is the war continues, the economy will suffer. -
1982 Lebanon War/ First Lebanon War
PLO units attacked northern Israel. Then Israel attacked PLO militants stationed in Lebanon. Israeli troops then succeeded in expelling the Plo leadership from Lebanon to Tunisia. Complications happed in Lebanon and Israel withdrew in June 1985. Until 2000, Israel has kept military in the south of Lebanon. -
First Intifada
Palestinians in the Gaza Stip attacked against Israel control of these territories. With the Palestinians with advance weapons, they attcked directly at soldiers and citizens until the Oslos Accords signing in 1993. -
Oslo Accords
the Oslo Accords was a set of agreeents that began in 1993 when Isarel and the PLO signed a Decleration of Principles (DOP). It told Israel to withdraw from the Gaza Strip for the Palestinians. -
Israel-Jordan Peace Treaty
The United States led a diffucult but succeesful diplomatic process to help Jordan and Israel achive peace. In 1994, Jordan became the second country to recognized Israel and slowly (but steadly) increased cooperation -
Camp David Summit
President Bill Clinton brought the Prime Minister of Isarel and the Palestinian President to Camp David in July 2000. This was the first major attempt to negotiate peace between them. Sadly, because of complication, they did not succeesed. -
