First Tattooing machine
The first written reference to the word “tattoo,” or “tatau,” appears in the journal of Joseph Banks, the naturalist aboard Captain James Cook’s ship the HMS Endeavor in 1769. Banks and the crew of the HMS Endeavor encountered the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand and found them adorned with indelible markings. However, tattoos date back as far as the Neolithic era, or around the fourth to fifth millennium BC. -
Eletric Tattoo MAchine
The first tattoo machine was built by a Danish inventor named Hans Christian Oersted in 1819 and was battery operated. Later, Thomas Edison, known best for his invention of the light bulb, brought Oersted’s patent to the United States and invented the electric pen, or stencil pen, in order to duplicate handwritten documents and drawings. -
First Tattoo Parlor
In 1891 a successful tattoo artist in New York named Samuel O’Reilly repurposed and re-imagined Edison’s electric pen and created the modern rotary tattoo machine. O’Reilly discovered that Edison’s machine could be modified to introduce ink into the skin. He later patented a tube and needle system for the purpose of providing an ink reservoir.
