School Nutrition

  • Free and Reduced Lunch Program

The Free and Reduced Lunch Program is an income based program that provides lunch at a lower cost for low income families.
This program is great because every student needs to eat no matter what the income level is.
  • Special Milk Program

The Special Milk Program started in 1954 and became permanent when it became a part of the Child Nutrition Act of 1966. The program reimburses schools for giving students free milk. I think that this program is great because milk is for growing kids and people as a whole to be getting into their diet. The government pays for the milk so the schools can give it to students for free. I think this helps because the students are more likely to get the milk if they don't have to pay for it.
  • Child Nutrition Act

The Child Nutrition Act extended the governments efforts to feed the nation's children healthy and nutritious foods. This act is helpful and necessary because students have to go to school, and if they are forced to be at school I think the schools should provide a healthy lunch for the students. The act legally enforced the efforts to make school lunches more nutritious which I think is necessary.
  • Breakfast Program

The School Breakfast Program was made permanent in 1975. The Program gives the ability to all students to have a nutritious breakfast every morning. I think that the program is good because some students only have the opportunity to eat at school. This program gives students a second good meal that they can eat, which is great because some students wouldn't eat breakfast otherwise.
  • DoD Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program

The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program was started in 1995 and delivers fresh fruit and produce to schools throughout the country. This is a great program because it provides students with fresh healthy fruit and vegetables. It adds nutrition to school lunches and gives students nutrients they might not be getting.
  • Hunger-Free Kids Act

The Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act gives funding to child nutrition programs and sets nutritional standards for schools. This program is extremely necessary because schools are known for having bad food and this act legally binds schools to having to meet certain standards of nutrition. The act also provides funding to help the schools supply nutritious foods which provides more initiative to follow the laws.
