He's credited with inventing Celluloid, one of the first types of plastic ever. He created it in New York, on April 6, 1869. His invention was created as a substitute for the elephant ivory used in pool balls. This was made possible by him combining his money with brothers, which they used to fund their experiments.

One of his best inventions was the Steam Engine Lubricator, which he invented in Detroit, Michigan, on the 12th of July, 1872. Since he had been a mechanical engineer apprentice, and worked for the Michigan Central Railroad, he had background knowledge of how much time and energy it took to lubricate steam engines, since you had to turn it off.

Before, people had to dip a pen in an ink reservoir every few words.
