    On November 29, 1947, the United Nations General Assembly voted 33 to 13 with 10 abstentions to partition western Palestine into two states -- one for the Jews, and the other for the Palestinian Arabs. Jerusalem, a holy city, was to become an international country under U.N. law.

    In the first attack the Egyptian army succeeded in crossing the Suez Canal and also established a good foothold the Syrians occupied part of the east. Weapons were supplied by the Russians and this enabled them to neutralize the Israeli air force,
