Child is referred
The student is referred for Special Education and services. This can be made by the parents, teacher, doctor, etc. If the referral is not made by the parents, they must be notified immediately. -
Disposition of Referral
The IEP team as 15 days to meet. This first IEP meeting is called the Disposition of Referral. At this meeting, the team discusses and reviews the data and information on the student that is available. -
Parental Consent
The parent must provide written proof of parental consent to the school before any evaluation can begin to take place. -
Evaluation Begins
If the IEP team does not feel they have enough information and data, they may complete an evaluation that may encompass many tools and strategies. Once the school has written consent from the student's parents, they may begin evaluation to determine a child's disabilities or lack thereof. -
Evaluation Process Ends
For initial and reevaluations, the evaluation process must be completed within 60 days after the parents give written consent. -
Extension for Evaluation
If there is written consent, the 60 day limit may be extended by a specific number of days, but not more than 30 days. -
Determining Eligibility
Once the evaluation is complete, the IEP team holds another meeting to determine eligibility. They look at all the information to determine if the child has a disability. -
IEP Development
Once it has been determined that the child has a disability and is eligible to receive Special Education services, the team has 30 days from the IEP meeting determining eligibility, where they also give parents the WPN, to draft and implement the IEP and determine related services.
