  • The First Electric Light

    The First Electric Light
In 1802, Humphrey Davy invented an electric battery with two pieces of copper wire and a piece of carbon. Due to the heat produced by the electrical current, the carbon glowed and emitted a dim light. However, due to the impracticality of the materials and manufacturing, they were not commercialised until 1840
  • Warren de la Rue

    Warren de la Rue
A British scientist named Warren de la Rue created a vacuum inside of a spherical glass bulb and coiled a piece of platinum wire inside of the vacuum. The ending result was the same as the first light in 1802, however the bulb made a slightly bright emission, due to the higher conductivity of the platinum. However, the cost of platinum was inefficient for widespread commercial usage.
  • Sir Joseph Swan

    Sir Joseph Swan
In 1802, Sir Joseph Swan implemented carbonized paper filaments into the lightbulb, which was cost efficient for widespread commercial usage. However, due to the inefficient vacuum and lack of electricity supply, they did not last a very long time. Approximately ten years later, cotton extract was used to create a more cost efficient light bulb; still not being able to be used for widespread commercialism.
  • Thomas Edison Creates the First Lightbulb

Thomas Edison Creates the First Lightbulb
In 1879, Thomas Edison discovered that a very thin piece of bamboo filament in between two pieces of copper wire was able to conduct an electrical current. This would not last a very long time but was efficient for scientists that would conduct further experiments and rich businessmen; but was not very good for all of the first world to use.

The Edison Company Produces the First Light
In 1880, the Edison Company published the first commercially available light bulb. They were released over America and eventually spread over the nation and eventually the world. Changing the way we perceive how the world works.

A Halt in the Evolution of the Lightbulb

During the early 1900's, the evolution of the lightbulb was halted. This is due to the weapons that most countries forced their scientists to work on and create for WW1 and WW2. However after WW1, many scientists and minds of the century went out of jobs due to the drop in the US dollar; during the great depression. Subsequently, making the country get back to where it was 40 years ago, to then advance onto where lightbulb advancements were during the cold war.
  • Invention of pixels

    Invention of pixels
In 1957 Russell Kirsch scanned an image of his infant son into a computer. At 176 by 176 pixels, the image was limited by the memory capacity of the computer. The pixel led to CT scanners, satellite imaging, bar code scanners, desktop publishing, blood cell-analysers and digital photography.
  • Creation of LEDs

    Creation of LEDs
In 1962, a Scientist named Nick Holonyak JR created the first LED. Due to the restricted technology, only a red LED could be made at the time however it was a great indicator for scientists and engineers to show that an electronic current was passing through an area. Originally many different semi-conductors were used to create the light element: GaAs, Ga, As and GaP.
