Improving Communication Timeline

  • Telegraph First Used, Baltimore, Maryland

    Samuel Morse sent the first-ever Telegraph message, the first wired communication between two places. It provided a quicker way for people to communicate, though it also limited the length of messages. It used a system of dots and dashes, known as Morse Code, that represented letters and numbers.
  • The First Transatlantic Telegraph Message

    1866 saw the the first Telegraph message sent between the United States and Europe when inventors successfully placed a cable on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. It allowed for quicker communication between North America and Europe. It was very useful for immigrants, who could quickly learn important news from family and/or community members
  • The First Telephone invented

    Alexander Bell sent the first telephone message on March 10, 1876. It allowed for voice communication between two people, as opposed to letter or code. It allowed for even quicker communication between people and less than 100 years later, was present in almost every American home.
  • First New Radio Broadcasts

    Radio Station 8MK Broadcasted Local and National News to the area surrounding Detroit, Michigan. Radios quickly became a form of mass communication, becoming present in many homes and businesses. It allowed for people to experience oral descriptions of events from people at a particular event- such as sporting events, news broadcasts, or even Presidential Inaugurations, far away from the event itself.
  • British Broadcasting Corporation shows the first TV Broadcast

    Just months after the formal invention of the television, The British Broadcasting Corporation showed a news show on television, allowing people to see another location in a real-time. It quickly became a way of broadcasting news and sports from the event itself, paving the way for the Broadcast television shows we see today.
  • The First Cell Phone Invented

    Martin Cooper made the first wireless phone call-the first cell phone call. It allowed for people to communicate with other people via a network of antennas that allowed wireless communication between two phones in many places (especially the cities) across the United States. They quickly became popular in cars and among people. It changed the way people communicated by allowing voice communication wirelessly from across the United States
  • First Desktop Computer

    Ed Roberts designed the first desktop computer Altair 8800, that is for personal use, in 1975. Inspired by the previously large size of previous computers, Roberts designed a device that could be placed in businesses, homes, and schools. It led to an increase in ways for people to communicate digitally throughout the world, inspiring inventions such as the cell phone, laptop, and internet.
  • Laptop Invented

    The first laptop, the Epson HX-20, a mobile computer, was invented in 1980 by Japanese researchers. It had a small screen and keyboard, but lacked internet access. It was caused by the sheer size of previous computer and was an attempt to make it easier to use and/or transport computers, which held important information, to different places. It led to an increasing challenge about producing computers for personal and mobile (that is, transportable) use.
  • Invention of the Internet

    January 1, 1983 the opening of the world wide web, the internet, which connected computers and fax machines across the world and country. It allowed for people to share information quickly across the US and World. It also set the foundation for easy communication and research for people by providing a place for people to share ideas, business information, and personal communication.
  • First iPhone, the first Smartphone, Invented

    Steve Jobs, the founder of technology giant, Apple, released the first iPhone, a mobile phone and computer, in 2007. It allowed for people to use GPS, internet, make phone calls, and look up information on the internet all on one device. It led to an era where many more devices, Smartphones have been invented, and resulted where people can instantly communicate with each other face-to-face from across the world, in addition to using the internet.
