    Huge dogfighting operation busted
    The HSUS’s animal fighting team worked alongside the Jefferson County Humane Society in southeast Ohio to rescue 200 dogs from a suspected dogfighting operation—the largest single dogfighting yard that we’ve ever uncovered. All of the animals were surrendered to The HSUS.

    Provided Care for 100,000+ Animals, Including Pets Affected by Hurricane Sandy
    After Hurricane Sandy hit New York and New Jersey, we opened a hotline for residents to report stranded pets and more than 1,300 calls came in asking for our help. Working with numerous public and private agencies in New York and New Jersey, our staff and volunteers rescued 257 animals, sheltered more than 500, and helped reunite more than 400 pets with their families.

    The HSUS contributed $500,000 to construct sanctuary space for 110 federally-owned chimpanzees being transferred from at the NIH’s New Iberia Research Center to Chimp Haven, the federal chimpanzee sanctuary in Keithville, La.

    Led an Investigation that Helped Prosecute a “Big Lick” Horse Trainer
    A groundbreaking HSUS undercover investigation documented shocking abuse of Tennessee walking horses that led to criminal indictments and public outrage. Our video footage documented the painful cruelty of horse soring, as well as animals being shocked in the face and beaten with heavy wooden sticks. Trainer Jackie McConnell was fined $75,000 and given three years probation by a federal judge.
  • Confronting extreme confinement on factory farms

    The three largest food service companies—Aramark, Sodexo and Compass Group—will transition all of their liquid eggs to cage-free in the U.S. market, which will move 3.5 million laying hens from cages into cage-free housing. And, with our help, a host of other companies have announced cage-free and gestation crate-free commitments, such as Dunkin' Donuts, Hilton and Kellogg Company.

    Direct care and responding to natural disasters
    Humane Society International came to the aid of people and animals affected by devastating earthquakes in Nepal. Together with our affiliates, we provided direct care to more than 100,000 animals. Our affiliated five animal care centers provided permanent sanctuary to more than 1,100 animals and rehabilitation care to another 13,000 animals. The Pets for Life Program hit a milestone of 100,000 pets helped with veterinary care and services in underserved communities.

    In Jamshedpur, India, more than 11,000 dogs have been sterilized as a result of Humane Society International's three-year project to reduce the dog population.
    More Pets Plus stores committed to the Puppy-Friendly Pet Stores model, featuring adoptable dogs instead of selling puppies.We honored the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina by awarding more than $1 million in grants to Gulf Coast animal shelters and veterinary programs.
  • Confronting animal cruelty and fighting

    Our Animal Rescue Team assisted local groups and law enforcement in saving 65 dogs from a hog-dog fighting operation in Alabama; 46 dogs and 11 other animals from frozen squalor at an Arkansas puppy mill; 150 animals, including cats, dogs and livestock, from unsafe and unsanitary conditions in North Carolina; more than 20 dogs from a West Virginia dogfighting operation; 24 animals, including horses, goats, dogs, cats, birds and a pig, from inhumane conditions in West Virginia; .
