  • Discovery of the Malaria Parasite

    Charles Louis Laverana French army surgeon was the first to notice parasites in the blood of patients.
  • Differentiation of species of Malaria

    Camillo Golgi firs differentiated differences between two different types of the disease. He observed that the different forms produced different numbers of new parasites. Discovered that the rupture of red blood cells coincided with bouts of fever.
  • Naming of human malaria parasites

    Italian investigators, Giovanni Grassi and Raimondo Filetti first introduced the names Plasmodium Vivax.
  • Discovery that mosquioes transmit malarial parasites

    Ronald Ross was the first to demonstrate that malarial parasites could be transmitted from infected patients to mosquitoes.
  • The Panama Canal

    The panama canal was made possible only by the control of malaria and yellow fever.
  • The U.S Public Health Service and Malaria

    Henry Rose Carter received funds from the U.S congress to control malaria. USPHS established malaria control activities around military bases to allow soldiers to train year round.
