    Thaumatrope was a toy used in the Victorian era and is credited to John Ayrton Paris or Peter Mark Roget. A thaumatrope is a circular card which has two different pictures on both of its sides. It is attached to a piece of string which runs through the centre of the card. Both of the sides of the string have to be twirled quickly between fingers in order to make the two pictures combine into one due to persistence of vision.

    Phenakistoscope
    Phenakistoscope is another animation device which was invented in the year of 1831, simultaneously, by the Belgian Joseph Plateau and the Austrian Simon von Stampfer.
    Phenakistoscope creates an illusion of motion using the persistence of vision principle. It consists of two disks, one having slits on its edge and the other a sequence of images. The motion can be seen if the user looks trough the opening (which is on the first disc).

    Zoetrope effectively creates an illusion of motion by rapid succession of static pictures. The word come from Greek meaning "motion" or a "wheel of life". The zoetrope consists of a cylinder with slits cut vertically in the sides. On the inner surface of the cylinder is a band with images from a set of sequenced pictures. As the cylinder spins, the user looks through the slits at the pictures across. This way cylinder creates a mechanical illusion of animation.

    First flip book was patented by John Barness Linett in 1868. Flip book is simply a little book of especially springy pages. The viewers bend back pages and release them one at a time. This little book works because of a psychological fact of our brain being able to focus better on stationary images rather than moving.

    Mr.Winsor McCay invented a revolutionary method of creating animations, in order to save time and money. Instead of drawing on a single sheet of paper and then redrawing the whole scene for (12 frames/s), the scenes were drawn in parts on thin transparent celluloid acetate or in other words "cel". For example, on layer would consist of a background, then body on another layer, next layer would be a head and the next would have expressions.
