  • Period: 499 BCE to 449 BCE

    The Persian Wars

    The Persian Wars were battles fought between The Persian Empire and the city-states of Greece. Greece did not consider itself one country or one culture, and this was the first time the cities had fought together as one. Banning together paid off for Greece, as they were able to stop the Persian Empire from conquering them the three times they tried. The Persians had never failed to conquer any land before, making Greece’s victory all the more impressive.
  • Period: 470 BCE to 399 BCE

    Socrates

    In the golden age of Athens many great philosophers gained fame. One of them went by the name of Socrates. Socrates liked to question the world around him, and was not satisfied with everything being explained by the gods. He proposed new ideas and finding answer in the natural world. Socrates liked to teach his students by asking questions and having them come up with their own answers. He was convicted by the government and found guilty for corrupting the youth. The punishment was death.
  • Period: 431 BCE to 404 BCE

    The Peloponnesian War

    The Peloponnesian War was fought between the Delian League, led by Athens, and the Peloponnesian League, led by Sparta. Athens had formed the Delian League after the Persian Wars. The league's purpose was to gather resources and taxes from its members so Athens could improve their navy. Many cities joined. Athens soon became imperialistic, and would not allow cities to leave. Sparta created its league to stand against Athens and the two opposing factions soon went to war.

    Alexander The Great Conquers Greece

    Alexander the Great is famous in history for his empire. He took over many important civilizations, including Greece. After the Peloponnesian War Alexander’s father conquered a weak Greece. When he died Alexander took the throne. Greece was not happy about being ruled over, could do nothing to change it. Greek culture then began to mix with other conquered civilizations culture. This new fusion of cultures was called Hellenism. Many important scientific advances were born through Hellenism.
