Evolution of Motorboats

  • First Steamboat

    First Steamboat
The first steamboat created by John Fitch and succesfully tested on the Delaware River on August 22, 1787. This was the start of a new era for boats. These boats helped improve the transportation of goods and other items.

    First Motorboat
Historians credit auto inventors Gottlieb Daimler and his partner, Wilhelm Maybach, as the inventors of the motorboat. Just one year after they built the first successful “horseless carriage,” Daimler and Maybach tested a small internal combustion engine on a boat on Germany’s River Neckar. The year was 1886.

  • Compression Engine

    Compression Engine
Rudolf Diesel also helped make great advancements in the motor boat industry. He is best known for inventing a 25-horsepower, four-stroke, single vertical compression engine. The diesel engine was introduced in 1903, and was an immediate commercial success. This allowed for motorboats to become more wide spread.

  • Outboard Motor

    Outboard Motor
Ole Evinrude finished his first outboard motor in 1907 And even to this day, outboard motors are basically the same: using Ole’s idea of a vertical crankshaft, horizontal flywheels, and set of bevel gears. Today Evinrude motors will propel a boat a bit faster than the ’07 version (150 mph versus 5 mph). Ole Evinrude didn't invent the first outboard motor, but constructed the first model that was practical, the first that would start at least half the time.

  • First Fiberglass Boat

    First Fiberglass Boat
Ray Greene was able to produce a fibreglass sailing dinghy in 1942. Other ‘plastic’ boats followed, an example appearing at a US boat show in 1947. Altogether, it's likely that thousands of fibre-glass boats, some quite small, existed by the late 1940s.

  • Waterjet Propulsion

    Waterjet Propulsion
The person who invented the waterjet propulsion system is William Hamilton. The first system, which was introduced in 1954, was made up of a vertical-shaft centrifugal unit driven through a right-angle gearbox. This development not only added speed to powerboats, it also added incredible directional stability.

  • Deep-V Hull

    Deep-V Hull
One of the motorboat's most important advances was the deep v-shaped hull, which offers speed, comfort, and safety in rough waters. The deep-v hull was conceived in 1963 by Charles Raymond Hunt.
