Abortion has been an issue since the beginning of early 1800s and many techniques and laws and enforcements have changed over the years. The views on abortion within the countries are all different and vary based on many reasons.

    Abortion

An abortion is a procedure to end a pregnancy. It uses medicine or surgery to remove the embryo or fetus and placenta from the uterus. The procedure is done by a licensed health care professional.
  • American Medical Association

In 1857, the recently formed American Medical Association (the AMA) began an ultimately successful campaign to criminalise abortion in all cases except when a woman’s life was at risk. The AMA had scientific, moral and practical reasons for seeking to change abortion laws.
  • Criminal Laws

By 1880s, every state made it a crime to get an abortion, leaving only few exceptions for women to have an abortion.
  • Roe v. Wade

In 1970s, ¨Jane Roe¨ filed a lawsuit against Henry Wade, the district attorney of Dallas County, Texas, where she resided, challenging a Texas law making abortion illegal except by a doctor’s orders to save a woman’s life. In her lawsuit, Roe alleged that the state laws were unconstitutionally vague and abridged her right of personal privacy, protected by the First, Fourth, Fifth, Ninth, and Fourteenth Amendments.
  • The Court´s Decision

The Court developed the trimester framework: regulations were impermissible in the first trimester; while in the second trimester the government could regulate only to advance an interest in women’s health, and only after the viability of the foetus had been established could the government advance an interest in fetal life.
  • Currently

The abortion status has not changed much since 1973: all states have made abortion legal and many protests to stop abortion and to make it legal through all trimesters have still been going on.
