  • Second Great Awakening

    A series of religious revivals based on Methodism and Baptism. Stressed a religious philosophy of salvation through good deeds and tolerance for all sects. Moral reform of people.
  • Invention of the Cotton Gin

    Invented by Eli Whitney, the cotton removed seeds from cotton fibers so that it could now be processed quickly and cheaply. In resulted in a need for more slaves for the greater acreage.
  • Era of Good Feelings

    Disappearance of the federalists enabled the republicans to govern in a spirit of seemingly nonpartisan harmony. Period of peace and prosperity with no outside threats. Allowed for US growth.
  • Tariff of 1816

    The first protective tariff in American History. Created to shield New England manufacturing from the inflow of British goods after the war of 1812. Helped American Industry by raising the prices of British manufactured goods.
  • Panic of 1819

    First major finical crisis of US The Second National Bank called loans, raised interest rates, and received the blame for the panic. This helped divided commercial interests of the east from the expanding west.
  • McCulloch v Maryland

    Strengthened federal authority and upheld the constitutionality of the bank by establishing that Maryland did not have the power to tax the bank. Federal government is proven to be more powerful than the states.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    James Monroe issued a proclamation to European nations that their colonization of the Western Hemisphere would be closely monitored and considered by the US. This was mainly for our national security. In return the US would not interfere in European affairs.
  • Tariff of Abominations

    Passed by Congress that favored manufacturing in the North and was hated by the South. Bill favored western agriculture by raising tariffs or import taxes on imported hemp, wool, fur, flax, and liquor, thus favoring Northern manufacturers
  • Mormon Church Established

    Church founded by Joseph Smith. The religious group emphasized moderation, saving, hard work, and risk taking. Started a movement in America values.
  • Indian Removal Act of 1830

    Land exchange treaties with tribes living in the east of the Mississippi River. The act was strongly supported by the South who were eager to gain access to the land. The Indians were soon removed, though this was meant to be a voluntary re-movement.
  • Invention of the Telegraph

    Samuel Morse invented the Telegraph as well as the Morse Code. The telegraph allowed for much fasted communication over large distances, it also connected the business world. This was a major step for the US.
