    Darius I invades Greece
    When the Greeks began to interfere with the lands of Ionia, Darius decided to invade Greece. That started the First Persian War, that is what it is known for. Darius led a huge army against the Greeks. However he was defeated at the Battle of Marathon by the army of Athens. Darius died in 486 BC, and his son Xerxes succeeded him as a king.

    Greeks Defeat Persians at Marathon
    When the war started the Persians landed at Bay of Marathon. The Persians had a lot more troops than the Greeks, but the Persians underestimated the Greeks. The Persian lost about 6000 troops and the Greeks lost 192 Greeks. Also Darius I, King of Persia, wantedto conquer the Greeks in 490 BC. He gathered may troops and headed towards Greece. Ten years later in 480 BC the son of Darius I wanted to get revenge on the Greeks. He got 200,000 troops and 1000 battle ships.

    Battle of Salamis

    Battle of Salamis
    When he Persians marched to Greece. They arrived at Athens, when thy were there is was deserted. All the people from Athens fled. The Athenian fleet was waiting off the the island of Salamis. The bigger Persian army attacked the small Athenian ships, but what they did not know about the Athenian ships was that they were called triremes. Those ships were fast and maneuverable. They rammed into the large Persian ships and sunk the Persian ships. With their victory the Persians had to retreat.

    Battle of Thermopylae
    The Greeks gathered a small army, which was led by Spartan King Leonidas I and 300 Spartans. They decided to meet the Persians the the narrow pass in the mountains called Thermopylae. The Greeks help off the Persians killing 1000 of the Persians, but the Persians found a way to flank the Greek troops. King Leonidas told most the Greek troops to flee, but some of the troops stayed including the 300 Spartans. Which allowed to Greek troops to escape. The Spartans killed until they died.

    Thirty Years Peae Between Argos and Sparta Begins
    After the Persian war the Athens and the Sparta had agreed on a Thirty Year Peace. They did not want to fight, they wanted to recover from the Persian War. While they were recovering the Athens became powerful and wealthy. They were under the leadership of the Pericles. The Sparta allies became jealous and distrustful of the Athens, so the Sparta an the Athens became on different sides in a conflict over the city of Corinth. Sparta declared a war on the Athens.

    Athens Invades Megara
    The Battle of Megara was fought in 424 BC between Athens and Megara, and an ally of Sparta. The Athens won against the Spartans. The Battle started when the Spartans declared war on the Athens when they became jealous of the Athens.

    End of the Peloponnesian War

    End of the Peloponnesian War
    In 405 BC the Spartan general Lysander defeated the Athenian fleet in battle. When the fleet got defeated the people in the city of Athens starved. They did not have a army to take on the Spartan's land. In 404 BC the Athens surrendered to the Spartans.
