American History I Timeline

  • The Proclamation of 1763

The Proclamation of 1763 was passed to prohibit colonist from entering land pass the Appalachian Mountains. The reasoning for this is that British government didn't have control over the land yet and they didn't want to get involved in another war. Instead they developed the land thats available to them. The colonist didn't like this because they fought in the war so they want the land.
  • The Currency Act

This act was made by Parliament because of the issue with money between the colonies and Britain. Each colony had a different currency so that affected Britain because the value would change so instead they decided to make the colonist use British currency and as a result the colonist didn't like it because it affected their economy.
  • The Sugar Act

The Sugar Act was passed to replace the ending Sugar and Molasses Act. The purpose of the Sugar Act was to reduce the trade with the French, Dutch and West Indias and bring it rather to Britain. This helped Britain get wealth.
  • The Quartering Act

Parliament passed this act for the British soldiers can stay among the colonist. The soldiers can come into houses without the consent of the owner and stay. This was not liked by the colonist, for example in New York the residents didn't want soldiers coming into their house. New York would need protest and then the Restraining Act was made.
  • The Stamp Act

The Stamp Act was passed by Parliament to tax the colonist. They did this because they were in debt from the French and Indian War. Parliament taxed things like card, newspaper, etc. The colonist didn't like the act because it applied to everyone. This would also affect the relationship between Britain and the colonist.
  • The Declaratory Act

As a result of the Stamp act, Parliament passed The Declaratory Act, which goes against it. The people liked The Declaratory Act and as a result it ended in giving more power to the British government. This act also showed that Parliament does trust the colonist even if they were self governing.
  • The Townshend Act

There was a total of 4 acts that came from this, it is another attempt to have control over the colonies. The British government taxed the colonist (items like tea, paint, paper and etc) and regulated trade that the colonies had. As a result of this act, the colonist started to protest because they had no representation.
  • The Revenue Act

This was one of the four Townshend Acts. This act made the colonist pay taxes on things like paint, paper, lead, tea, and glasses. The British government did this to repay their debt from the French and Indian War. This is also the second tax that all colonies had to follow.
  • The Boston Massacre

It was a riot that happened on the street of Boston. There was tension between the colonist and Britons soldiers but it was even greater when a 11 year old boy was killed by a soldier. On the day of March 5th of 1770, colonist were threatening the soldier keeping watch of the King's money. Then back up was called and they shoot at the colonist resulting in 5 colonist dead and 6 wounded. This upset many of the colonist and it made them distrust Britain.
  • The Tea Act

The Tea Act was made to directly ship tea to the colonist. The British government needed money and they had too much tea so they shipped it to the colonist for they can buy it but the colonist refused to buy it. The colonist didn't like being taxed and also having to buy British products.
  • The Boston Tea Party

The colonist weren't liking that Britain wanted them to pay their tea and have to pay taxes for it. To go against the British government, a group of man dressed at Native Americans through 342 chest of tea into the Boston harbor. Some of this men will be known as the Sons of Liberty. As a result of this Parliament closed the harbor.
  • The Quebec Act

It was made by Parliament to move more west as far as the Mississippi River and more south. It was still under French rule and Parliament keep it but make the laws under British rule. The people that would keep/ control the Quebec area is the Roman Catholics. The colonist didn't like this because they wanted to go to that land and it seemed unfair.
