Sit-ins Challenge Segregation
CORE created sit-ins in 1943. It was a tactic to desegregate the Jack Spratt Coffee House in Chicago. It was a common and powerful tactic of the Civil Rights Movement. Sit-ins consisted of protesters in Segregated public places refusing to leave unless served. Citizens who often opposed Desegregation targeted protesters violently. Many participants were arrested or sent to jail.
