    Clara Bow led the trend for smoky eye shadow, thin eye brows, and bow-shaped lips. Makeup was heavy and dramatic so it could be seen in black and white.

    1930: The Great Depression
    The Great Depression lasted from 1929 to 1939, and was the worst economic downturn in the history of the industrialized world. It began after the stock market crash of October 1929. This caused ladies to reduce the amount of make up worn at the time to save money and product. Film makeup became lighter and more refined during the Great Depression. Eye brows were severely plucked or shaven and penciled on. A more natural-shaped lip was preferred.

    1940: WWII & Technicolor Film
    Technicolor film took off in the forties. Due to the World War II women had to tone their makeup down, including Hollywood starts, and yet the red lip color was a must. Women were resigned to tone down their makeup to cooperate with the hard times.
  • 1950: "Old Hollywood Glamour"

    1950: "Old Hollywood Glamour"
    The 50's beauty icons were Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly. They were the definition of the "Old Hollywood Glamour". This was the time where ladies used reddish-pink lipsticks, pastel tones on eye lids and the famous cat eye.

    This was popularized by the model Twiggy creating a strong influence on Hollywood makeup. Actresses like Audrey Hepburn and Mia Farrow experimented with heavy false eye lashes and paler lip colors. This was commonly known as a retro look giving emphasis on the eyes.

    In movies and everyday life, athletic-looking aesthetic is what was tending in the seventies. Actresses layered on the bronzer and topped their lips with pale peach and pink lip gloss. This is where the cream multi-color eye shadow was booming, while still maintaining a natural allure.

    This was the decade of experimentation in beauty. Brooke Shield's full eye brows set a trend after The Blue Lagoon. Pink was the blush and lipstick of choice.

    There was no specific look for this decade, but there were clear trends such as matte skin, natural blush, and brownish-red lips. Clueless went from the punk-rock girl look to a girlish makeup look. Hinting yet another change to come.

    This was the era of new risks in the Hollywood makeup world. This was the time where black eyeliner, shimmer, lip gloss started resurfacing. For Hollywood, it meant that more actresses took beauty risks for roles, such as wearing no makeup, prosthetic or on the other side of the spectrum, wearing extreme makeup such as Natalie Portman in Black Swan.

    Bold lips, sharp winged eyeliner, contoured face. With new 4K cameras coming into play, makeup artists were forced to use a lighter hand. This is the time where ANYTHING goes.
