    Brown v. Board of Education
    Brown v. Board of Education was a series of Supreme Court cases that abolished the policy of “separate but equal” and Plessy V. Ferguson. The Court said, “we cannot turn the clock back to 1868…” referring to the Plessy V. Ferguson case. Looking towards the future, they required all public schools to integrate.

  • 1956 Flag Controversy

    1956 Flag Controversy
    In the mid-1950’s, the Georgia General assembly made the decisions to change the Georgia State Flag. It was changed without a statewide vote and, today, many still wonder why the flag was changed. The new flag included the Confederate battle emblem on two-thirds of it.

    Sibley Commission
    The Sibley Commission was created in 1960. John Sibley was chosen by the Governor to be head of this commission. Sibley and his associates held hearings to gather information on how residents felt about integration. Most Georgians interviewed were against integration.

    Albany Movement
    The Albany Movement were protests against segregation in Albany, GA. The two main groups involved were the NAACP and SNCC. Martin Luther King, Jr. was brought in later during the movement, as well. It resulted in many protesters being arrested and was deemed a failure due to no immediate changes.

    March on Washington
    The March on Washington was a protest to pressure the passing of the Civil Rights Act. It was held in Washington, D.C and over 200,000 people participated. During the event, ​the famous “I Have a Dream” speech was given by Martin Luther King Jr., as well.

    The 1964 Civil Rights Act made any type of segregation in public establishments illegal. It banned discrimination in businesses, as well. It was signed in by Lyndon B. Johnson due to the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The law was divided into 11 sections.

    The 1965 Voting Rights Act aimed to overcome discrimination by race or color that prevented African Americans from exercising their right to vote. It contained 17 sections and was signed into law by Lyndon B. Johnson.

    Summerhill Race Riot
    The Summerhill Race Riot was a four-day riot that took place in the Summerhill neighborhood in Atlanta, Georgia. It began after the Atlanta police shot a suspected car thief. It resulted in one death and about​ twenty injuries.
