First H bomb detonated in the United States
The United States conducts the first airborne test of an improved hydrogen bomb, dropping it from a plane over the tiny island of Namu in the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean on May 20, 1956. The successful test indicated that hydrogen bombs were viable airborne weapons and that the arms race had taken another giant leap forward. -

After preliminary tests on laboratory animals proved successful, Salk began testing his polio vaccine on children on July 2, 1952. In one of the largest medical tests in history, nearly 2 million young “polio pioneers” were injected with the vaccine over the next two years. -
USSR Launches Sputnik
The launch of Sputnik 1 shocked many Americans, who had assumed that their country was technologically ahead of the Soviet Union, and led to the “space race” between the two countries. Sputnik 3 Launched May 15, 1958, by the Soviet Union, it made and transmitted measurements of the pressure and composition of Earth's upper atmosphere, the concentration of charged particles, and the influx of primary cosmic rays. -
