    The United States purchased Alaska from Russia for 7.2 million dollars. The treaty with Russia was negotiated and signed by Secretary of state William Seward and Russian minister to the United States Edouard de Stoeckle. This was all during the Cold War.

    The Transcontinental Railroad was the first continuous railroad line across the United States and opened for through traffic. It had opened in 1869. Also with the trans continental railroads President Leland Stanford ceremonially drove the gold "Last Spike" at Promontory Summit.
