    Alaska is purchased from Russia
    Russia offered to sell it's North American territory to the United States on several occasions,but the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861 led to the postponement of discussion.The cost and logistical difficulties of supplying the territory had made it an economic liability to the Russians,who were additionally struggling with debt.The Treaty was submitted to the Senate for Consent on March 30,1867. Most Russians who had occupied the territory were not permanent residents.

    Alexander Graham Bell invents the telephone
    Alexander Graham Bell was interested in sound technology because his wife & mother were deaf. He wanted to find a way to transmit voice through wires. He and his partner Thomas Watson invented a simple receiver that turned electricity in to sound.A few days after his telephone patent was granted on March 7 1876,he made his first telephone call to Watson. The Bell telephone company, established in 1877 is now known as AT&T.

    Scientists had been trying to invent and electric light to replace the gaslight for 50 years.Edison was able to set up the Edison Electric Light Company,with help of investors.After much research and development,he made a bulb with a platinum filament.Since the light from this bulb didn't last long,Edison continued his research.He finally came up with a long-lasting,affordable light bulb that uses carbonized bamboo for the filament.

    The large mass human migration occurred in the 1800's because Europe was plagued with political instability,economic distress,and religious persecution.America could not handle that many people through Castle Garden,so the government constructed a new immigration station on Ellis Island.The first immigrants processed at Ellis Island were a teenage girl from Ireland & her two younger brothers.Ellis Island was the gateway to the United States for more than 12 million immigrants spanning 62 years.

    This is the first act of many designed to protect American Consumers.The Food and Drug Act prohibits unacceptable ingredients in our food,and pharmaceuticals , and for mislabeling products.It also protects consumers from being misled by false claims.Several Acts followed over several years that regulate how food & drugs and prepared,packaged,labeled, and sold in the United States.

    The first Model-T Ford was completed in Detroit.It was built for all people to drive everyday,not just the wealthy.To keep prices low,Ford built just one model of the car.It had interchangeable parts that helped reduce waist,save time,and was easy to assemble.The model T-was in production until May 26,1927.

    When President McKinley was assassinated,Theodore Roosevelt took over the presidency as the youngest man to hold this position in America History.He serves from 1901-1909. He urged progressive reforms and a strong foreign policy-After leaving politics ,and going on an African Safari.Roosevelt ran for President on a Progressive ticket.

    The Panama Canal is completed and opened for traffic
    Because of the time & cost it took ships to navigate around South America to get from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean,a waterway was built through the Isthmus O Panama.The canal is 50 miles long,cutting through mountains and jungle at sea level.The first ship to officially travel through the Panama Canal was the SS Ancon, an American Cargo and Passenger Ship. The Panama Canal is now recognized as one of the seven wonders of the world.

    When WWI began in 1914, the United States was neutral.There was a war zone around America's trade partner, Britain.Germany declared war fair on all ships that entered that zone,whether they were neutral or not.After Germany sank many unarmed ships, including and Italian Liner without warning the United States was enraged.After Germany sank 4 more American ships, President Wilson declared war on Germany.

    Women got the right to vote
    The battle for women's Rights took about 100 years.First arguing that men and women were created equal, the movement adopted that women were created different than men.This served several agendas to want to empower women to vote.After 36 states had voted to ratify the 19th Amendment, U.S. Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby certifies the ratification of the 19th Amendment,giving all American women the right to vote.
