The Treaty of Nanjing granted the British Hong Kong and extraterritorial rights to foreigners in ports around china. -
Commodore Perry enters tokyo harbor
Commodore Perry, a memebr of the US navy, had a voyage across the atlantic to tokyo. When he arrived the Japaniese citizens had never seen metal ships and industrialization due to isolationism. This opens up Japan. He presented a letter from millard filmore saying that they must open up trade with the US. The Japaniese opened two ports for the US to trade. Other western powers soon followed. -

The Spanish American war was a conflict between Spain and the US. Mainly started by the US' intesions to take control of the phillipines. Spain had control of Cuba so they were close. The Spanish, while they were fighing the US, was dealing with revolts from cuban natives. The US kept the people on their side by using Yellow Journalism. -
Mexican Revolution Begins
It all started with Santa anna as caudillo of mexico. Wanted to rule mexico has a dictatorship. Many revolts. Santa Anna then wanted to get rid off Texians. They suceeded with the battle of alamo. Santa Anna and his troops held Texians under seige for 13 days. Mexicains win battle. Santa Anna was then humilliated in a bunch of other battles that lowered the power of mexico. -
Panama Canal Opens
Us' president Teddy Roosevelt wanted to control the Panama Canal. He knew that it would ussure in an abundance of trade. He provided aid and millitary assistance to the natives of Panama who were revolutionizing. After Panama became a free nation it helped the US construct the Panama Canal. The US leased it for 99 years.
