    Brown vs Board of Education
    This supreme court ruling made it so discrimination in American public schools was outlawed. The court was very divided on their decision, but the final ruling was in favor of ending discrimination.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Montgomery Bus Boycott
    The Boycott lasted 381 days and began when Rosa Parks had a court hearing for refusing to give up her seat on a bus. After days of boycotting, the federal court declared that segregated seating on buses was a violation of 14th Amendment.
  • Little Rock Crisis

    Students were not allowed to enter a racially segregated school shortling following the ruling of Brown v Board of Education. The issue was settled with the school cooperating.

    Latino Movement

    Mainly a movement for Mexican-American Civil rights in land grands, rights for farm workers, better education for minorities and rights in political fields such as voting. The movement was successful in creating these rights for many minorities including Latinos.
  • Sit in movement

    In North Carolina, african american students were denied service at a woolsworth stire and decided to do a sit-in until the store lifted their discrimatory policies. Sit ins are a form of non violent protest and can be effective.
  • United Farm Workers

    United Farm Workers is a union of farm workers formed to resist against government policies on farmer commerce and work.

    Counterculture

    Counterculture was rejecting from what would socially be considered "normal". A large example is "hippies" who opposed war and use of nuclear weapons in war.
  • NAACP

    NAACP
    Many civil rights groups and activist used strategies that the NAACP used in the 1920's and 30's. The use of NAACP strategies helped create the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act along with others.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    After the assassination of President Kennedy, Congress declared they would be the session that did more for civil rights that what had been done over 100's of years. Segregation was outlawed on all levels in the public based on race, religion etc.
  • Counterculture Music

    Music coming from counterculture was a more electric sounding music becoming more popular over the years
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    Bill signed by President Lyndon B Johnson that's main goal was to outlaw discrimination in voting. Also, in the previous year the 24th amendment made poll taxes illegal allowing everyone to vote.

    Martin Luther King Jr was a civil rights activist most known for his "I Have a Dream" speech. He was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee.
