    After 2 days they encountered Manteo and Wanchese who are natives. They became friends. After 6 weeks at Roanoke Island they carried Manteo and Wanchese back to England.
  • Then there was Sir Walter Raleigh.

    Then there was Sir Walter Raleigh.
    He was given permission to claim land and set up colonies in North America so he sent two men named Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to find a suitable one. They arrived at North America in April and by July they were off the coast of North Carolina. They colonized the area. They area is called Roanoke Island.

    Problems with the Colony
    They did not bring enough food to last the winter. They sent six ships to England and bring back food and supplies with them ASAP. While they were there they had good relationship with Manteo tribe, Croatoan. England had a bad growing season so the ships did not return. As they are there, a tribe plans to attack them. Ralph also secretly raids rival tribes villages and killed their chief, Wingina.
  • Raleigh wants to colonize the area.

    Raleigh wants to colonize the area.
    So the expedition returns to England with good news and report of the new area which is now called Virginia. Raleigh begs the Queen to colonize the area. The Queen said yes and Raliegh sent 100 men to colonize the area.
  • The Ralph Lane Colony

    The Ralph Lane Colony
    7 ships of only men including Manteo and Wanchese set sail for Roanoke. Ralph Lane is the commander of the colony. The men's families would arrive 10 months later. So they have 10 months to prepare for their families arrival. They arrive on June 26.
  • Drake to the Rescue

    Drake to the Rescue
    A few days after Drake left, the ships from England returned to Roanoke. The captain of the ship agrees to leave his men behind to hold the region for England when they find one there.
