The Browns and the Slave Trade

  • The Brown brothers send the ship "Mary" to Africa.

  • Their second ship "Wheel of Fortune" is captured by the French along with much of the family's investment.

  • 3 ship[s are sent to the Caribbean. 2 of them are to sell horses and the third, named the "Sally", is first to go to West Africa to aquirre slaves that will be sold to British colonies in the Caribbean.

  • Captain Hopkins and the "Sally" arrive on the coast of Africa.

  • Captain Hopkins bought his last of 196 slaves. Nine of whom were sold to other traders on the coast, and twenty died before the ship left. The death toll continued during the voyage.

  • Slaves rise in rebellion. The crew starts firing, they kill eight, and wound several others.

  • The Brown brothers fire Captain Hopkins.
