  • Homestead Act

    Homestead Act
    President Abraham Lincoln had signed this act in 1862. It made it possible so that anyone including the freed slaves; anyone who hadnt armed against the US could claim land. 160 acres of land to be exact.

    He wrote many novels as an american author (over 100). He was known for his classic novel, The Jungle.

    This was a time period where iron and steel were a major need. This imporoved transportation, because of the growth of railroads. More railroads were made because of the production of the steel and iron. 1887-1889.

    The early 20th century these people were journalist. Originally meaning "one who rakes muck" These people published many scandals and happenings between business leaders.
  • Haymarket Riot

    This was a riot that took place after a bombing in a labor factory. People were tired of the dangerous work conditions with very low pay. The riot was a protest that ended with many police and the finding of who threw the bomb.

    The congress passed this act. The law was focused on breaking up reservations of land. The tribe was holding on to their land and the US was trying to take this land. For that reasoning and many selfish reasons they made this act.

    Votes were exchanged or traded for social services. Like jobs and other important things that were needed at this times. Money was a problem for many people at this time, having financial problems. So the political machines helped some.
  • Klondike Gold Rush

    About 100,000 people set out on search for gold in the Yukon. Only about 30,000 had actually finished the trip. 1896-1898
  • Pure Food and Drug Act

    A law f the US causing the foods and meats of companies to be inspected. They forbade the manufacture also transportation. The inspections helped prevent food poison and any other sickness to follow bad production of food.
  • Federal Reserve Act

    This act set up or built the Federal Reserve System. Helped formed the economic system, over all creating a more organized system.
  • Immigration & The American Dream

    Immigrants traveled to the US in hopes to conquere the American Dream. In hopes of a better life with a good paying job, and ways to take care of their families.
  • Tea Pot Dome Scandal

    Took place from 1920 to 1923. This was the leasing of federal oil reserves.
  • Suffrage

    Giving people the right to vote. This was not a right fo reveryone at the time and people had to fight for their freedom rights to vote. People lived to see their "final victory" in 1920... the right to vote!
  • Civil Service Reform

    Also known as the CSRA was an act. Is over the labor organizations. The act added regulations and laws to work and jobs. And is still used today in the United States Department of Labor.
  • Indian Removal

    The Indian Removal Act was passed so that the United States could take over the land. The act would "negotiate" with the Indian tribes in order to get the land. Though many of the negotiations didn't go to plan.
  • Initiative, Referendum, Recall

    Initiative is a process that lets citizens bypass their state legislature the first state to ever do it was South Dakota in 1898. Referendum are measures refering to a ballot. I allows voters to have an opinion on different acts. Recall is what allows the people to be able to replace an official before the end of their term.
