    Dame schools were very selective in the things that were taught to students, but everything students learned fit with the time period they lived in. These schools successfully set up students for the next part of their lives. This mentality has carried on to our schools today.

    These institutions provided higher schooling to the middle class. This included women. These academies also became the main place for the best education in order to become an elementary teacher.
  • Creation of Massachusetts State Board of Education

    Creation of Massachusetts State Board of Education
    Horace Mann was appointed as the first secretary of education on the board. He went above and beyond anyone else in the field of education in the 19th century. He convinced many Americans of the importance of universal, free education. He also helped to unify the state school system along with some others in the north. For these reasons, and many others he is often referred to as "The Father of American Education".

    Brown vs. Board of Education
    Within this case, the "separate but equal" from Plessy vs. Feruson is overruled. The court also stated that education is one of the most important government functions. They said this because education sets students up for their later life. This is a view of education that is also used today.
  • No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB)

    No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB)
    This was an attempt for the federal government to improve the achievement gap between students. Those targeted on the lower end of the gap were students like low-income students, minorities, English language learners, and disabled students. They did this by making states have all their students reach a certain score in standardized tests. Although not all students perform well in testing situations, this was a step the government took towards attempting to improve education at a federal level.
