Space Race

  • Sputnik 1

Teacher Scholastic Soviet launched Sputnik 1 into space showing America that they can launch rockets anywhere in space which is what started the space race between Soviet Union and America.
  • Laika (Sputnik 2)

Teacher Scholastic Soviet pulled ahead in this part of the race because they launched Sputnik 2 with Laika the dog aboard. This showed them that they could launch humans into space.
  • Explorer 1

Pbs U.S.A. launched their first satellite into space to catch up to the Soviet. Explorer 1 had all sorts of scientific machines to collect data to bring back to Earth.
  • Luna 2

Pbs America and Soviet both had their eyes on the moon, both had tried to make things land on the moon, but Soviet pulls ahead because Luna 2 hits the surface. With Luna 2 hitting the surface the Soviet knew which path to take.
  • Vostok 1

Teacher Scholastic America was behind in the space race because Soviet just lanched Yuri Gargarin into spacein Vostok 1. It let the Soviet know that they could let humans up into space and they would survive.
  • J.F.K. speech to send someone to moon

Space The Soviet and America both had their eyes on the moon. They both launched many space probs but they mostly failed. Then one day J.F.K. said the US would launch someone into sapce and bring them back safely by the end of the decade. This made scientists work harder to improve their building so they could build a good space ship.
  • Mercury 6

Teacher ScholasticSpace John Glenn wasn't just the oldest person ever in space, he was the first American to orbit the Earth. Not only that he was the first person to orbit Earth 3 times in a row.
  • Voshkod 2

Teacher Scholastic The Soviet performed the first space walk, which improved science showing how humans can survive in space. Also how to make better improved space ships.
  • Surveyor 1

Space The US sent Surveor 1 to see how the surface of the moon was. Once it landed it took 11,000 photos in 30 days. It also let NASA know that the moon was safe to land on.
  • Apollo 11

Pbs The space race finally came to an end when Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon.It was a great day for NASA telling them that they could now study more planets/moons and go almost anywhere.
