    When Sputnik I was launched by the Soviet Union, it began the amazing "space war" with the United States. It was the first artificial satellite that was put in to the Earth's orbit.
  • Explorer I

    Explorer I
    Explorer 1 was the first Amercian satellite ever put out into space. It was launched after the Soviet's Sputnik 1 and 2. It's primary instrument was a cosmic ray detector that measured the radiation enviroment on Earth's orbit. The satellite remained in orbit until 1970.
  • NASA was formed

    NASA was formed
    On October 1, 1958, it was the official start of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, or also known as NASA. NASA started the beginning of a rich history of unique scientific and technological achievements in human space flight, aeronautics, space science, and space applications. It formed as a result of the Sputnik crisis, and was created to develop more ideas to improve space flight.

    The Pioneer 10 mission was the first to be sent to the outer Solar System. It was sent to investigate the planet Jupiter after which it followed an escape trajectory from the solar system. The Pioneer 10 set a huge trademark for the United States during the space race.

    Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space. He was sent by the Russians on the Vostok 1 space craft. He became the soviet hero and this advanced the Russians in the space race.

    After the Russians sent a man in outer space.The United States sent Alan Shepard. He was on board a tiny mercury capsule by the name of Freedom 7.
  • NASA announced the Gemini Program

    NASA announced the Gemini Program
    The Gemini Program had many different objectives. First off, it subjected astronauts to long duration flights. Also, it wanted to develop effective methods of rendezvous and docking with other orbiting vehicles, and to maneuver the docked vehicles in space. Thirdly, it wanted to gain additional information concerning the effects of weightlessness on crew members. Finally, it needed to to perfect methods of reentry and landing the spacecraft at a pre-selected land-landing point.

    First (Russian) Woman in Space
    Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman to ever be in space. She boarded the Vostok 6 on her flight to space. She had the call sign of "Chaika." Which means Seagull. Tereshkova embodied the qualities expected of the new soviet woman. She was a reliable communist and a factory worker from a humble background. Most importantly, she had the looks, charm, and attitude for the job.

    The first spacewalk ever performed was by Alexei Leonov of the USSR. This spacewalk lasted for about 20 minutes. Leonov had problems re-entering the craft because his suit had enlarged slightly.     Ed White was the first American walk in space. White floated around in space for 23 minutes and was over the state of Hawaii and the Gulf of Mexico.

    Luna 10 was the first spacecraft to orbit the moon. This spacecraft finished its orbit in only 3 hours.The designwas very was similar to Lunar 9. After it went into orbit, the satellite separated but stayed close by.

    Soyuz 1 was a manned spacecraft holding Vladimir Komarov. It was the first of the Soyuz series. The team creating it however, had little knowledge on its design or its mission On its return back to Earth, technical problems caused a crash and the death of Vladimir. It was the first fatal space flight.

    Apollo 8
    Apollo 8 was the first spacecraft that ever orbited to the moon. It was launched from Cape Kennedy, Florida at 7:50 a.m., on December 21, 1968. About two hours and fify minutes later, a transluna injection was performed and the astronaunts were on their way to the moon. The spacecraft was placed in a nearly circular orbit from the moon at 57.9 by 60.7 nautical miles in which it remained for eight orbits. A nearly flawless mission was completed on the morning of December 27th when it crashed.

    Apollo 11 was the first spacecraft to ever land on the moon with humans. On board was Neil Armstrong, and Buzz Aldin Jr. Apollo 11 fulfilled President Kennedy's goal on reaching the moon before the Russians.
