  • 499 BCE

    The Persian Wars

    The Persian Wars was a war that consisted of 3 separate battles against the Persian Empire and Greek City states. Because the Persian Empire was so big, Persia outnumbered Athens greatly, so the Greek city-states had to come together in order to defeat the Persian Empire. The Persian Empire vowed to defeat Athens after the Athenians helped one of their colonies in the Persian Empire rebel against Persian Rule. It's significant because Greek city-states untied as one to defeat the Persian Empire.

    The Golden Age in Athens

    After the Persian wars, Athens emerged as the leader of the Delian League, which was an alliance of Greek city-states in the event that the Persian Empire might attack them.The Golden Age was the time where Athens was very wealthy and powerful as a result of the Persian Wars. Athens' economic prosperity led to the golden age of culture. It's significant because the golden age led to the creation of theater, and classical art, which we still use to this day.

    The Peloponnesian War

    The Peloponnesian war was a war between Athens and Sparta. Athens became too powerful as leader of the Delian league so some of the Greek city-states wanted to leave. Athens conquered the city-states and took the Greeks as slaves as punishment, so Sparta created the Peloponnesian league to conquer the Delian league. Athens undergoes a plague, resulting in a victory for Sparta. It's significant because city-states that were once allies became enemies after the power went to their head.

    The Reign of Alexander the Great

    When his father, Phillip the ll died,Alexander the Great gained rule of Macedonia. During his reign, Alexander the Great conquered Greece, Anatolia, Egypt, Persia and India.After conquering many empires and expanding his own, he forced his army to go about in harsh weather conditions. Eventually, Alexanders forces turned on him and demanded they head home. The Significance of this is no other empire could conquer Greece but Alexanders army did after Greece was weakened by the Peloponnesian wars.
