RtI Process

  • Stage 1: Initial Concern

This stage begins when someone is having concerns about the student and this causes the concern to be addressed either informally or formally. Once the initial concern is expressed, it should be dealt with consistently.
  • Stage 2: Information Gathering

Information is being collected on the student. This information includes: instructional methods, strategies, and materials that have been previously tried or used
    The student’s skill level
The student’s background knowledge and experiences
School and home expectations for behavior and academic performance
    Classroom behavior management techniques
  • Stage 4: Discussion of Possible Strategies

Interventions are discussed and chosen and the duration of these interventions are also discussed.
Classroom environment (e.g., changing seating positions, making the classroom more accessible)
Classroom management system (e.g., increasing positive reinforcement)
Instructional procedures (e.g., providing additional instruction, presenting content in a different format, grouping students)
Task demands (e.g., assigning only the odd-numbered math problems, instead of all of them)
  • Stage 5: Implementations and Monitoring of Progress

The plan that was created is implemented and data is being collected as the plan is used to ensure whether or not it is working. Progress Monitoring is a huge part of this stage.
  • Stage 6: Evaluation and Decision Making

Data is looked over and the team determines if the intervention plan is working or not. If it is not, then the team discusses if it should be kept or modified, if it is, it can continue to be used.
  • Stage 3: Information Sharing and Team Discussion

The review process of the information collected begins in this stage and interventions start to be discussed.
Specific concerns that prompted the referral
    Student’s strengths, talents, and interests
Student’s skills compared to those of his or her classroom peers
Setting or situation in which the concern developed
    Previously attempted strategies or interventions
Best times to observe the student to see the behavior of concern
