  • 753 BCE

    Founding of Rome

    Ancient Rome was founding by two brothers and demigods by the names of Romulus and Remus on 21 April 753 BCE. In an argument over who would rule the land, Romulus killed Remus and named the city after him.
  • 509 BCE

    Founding of Republic

    The Romans overthrew their Etruscan conquerors. Once free, the Romans established a republic in which the citizens elected representatives to rule on their behalf.

    Punic Wars

    The Punic Wars benefitted by expanding the Mediterranean. Elimination Carthage allowed Rome the control of the trade and power of the Mediterranean without opposition.
  • Period: 60 BCE to 53 BCE

    The Triumvirate

    The First Triumvirate was a political alliance between three men in the Roman Republic: Gaius Julius Caesar, Marcus Licinius Crassus, and Gnaeus Pompey. It was directly responsible for making these men the three most powerful men in Rome; a move that set Julius Caesar on the path to becoming the eventual dictator of Rome.

    Death of Caesar

    After Caesar's death, many civil wars broke out among the empire in Rome. Those wars ended the republic. Caesar's nephew, Octavian Augustus, became the first emperor of Rome.

    Battle of Actium

    The Battle of Actium was an epic battle that put former allies Marc Antony and Cleopatra against Octavian. When Octavian reigned supreme, the ended the Roman Republic and began the Roman Empire. The defeat of Antony and Cleopatra ultimately led to a double-suicide.

    Death of Nero

    Nero's empire started to crumble and he realized that the senate was planning to kill him. Instead of having that happen to him, he committed suicide by his assistant. His last words were "Qualis artifex pereo" meaning "What an artist the world loses in me."

    Death of Marcus Aurelius

    Emperor Marcus made his son Commodus co-emperor with him in 177. In 180, Marcus caught smallpox and then starved himself to death at the age of 58. His reign will forever be known as the golden age.
  • Period: 272 to 337

    Life of Constantine

    Constantine was regarded as one of the best emperors of Western Rome. He used his power to address the status of Christians which soon legalized Christianity and allowed freedom of worship throughout the empire. While in power, Constantine issued reforms intended to strengthen his regime. One reform was a reorganization of the army, which helped Constantine when he faced tribes such as the Visigoths and the Sarmatians.

    Fall of Rome

    Romulus, the last of the Roman emperors of the west, was overthrown by German leader Odoacer, who became the first Barbarian to rule in Rome. Order of western Europe would now come to an end.
