Road to the End of Reconstruction

  • 10% Percent Plan

    Lincoln was brainstorming a plan for reconstruction like the 10% plan. This stated that 10% of the Southern people had to pledge their loyalty to the union.
  • Wade Davis Bill

    The radical republicans wanted the confederates to pay for fighting against the Union. So they considered a bill talking about how the majority of the South had to pledge their loyalty to the union and couldn't be elected.

    Black Codes

    Black Codes were the South's way of keeping the white race superior to others. Through this racist event, the South required people to be able to read or pay to get into election booths.

    Lincoln got assassinated on April 14th 1865
  • Andrew Johnson took office

  • 13th ammendment

    All former slaves were freed to the world and now were recognized as people and not property.
  • KKK was formed

    Many racist Southerners despised that freedmen were gaining power. This is why groups like the KKK formed. They started with sending threats to African Americans homes by burning crosses but later started hanging people
  • Rise of the Radicals

    The Radical Republicans held the majority in Congress, therefore, able to control every bill that went through Congress. Basically they controlled reconstruction.
  • Reconstruction Act

    Congress set their plan for reconstruction in place.
  • Congress tried to impeach president Johnson

    Congress had control over what was passed because they held the majority. If the president passed something that they didn't like then they would override it with the majority. And if the president vetoed one of their bills then they would override the veto.
  • 14th ammendment

    Protected African American rights.
  • 15th Amendment

    The 15th ammendment allowed everyone to vote despite any race, color, or any other previous condition.
