Revolutionary War Timeline

  • First Continental Congress

    (September 5 through October 26, 1774) The decisions that were made in the First Continental Congress were: They demanded the King to stop the Intolerable Acts, or they world boycott and which they did. Also, they sent a letter to King George III explaining the issues the colonies had with the way they were being treated.
  • Battle of Lexington

    The Battle of Lexington was important because it was were the Revolutionary War started. There were around 80 American Militiamen when the British arrived. They never expected to fight, but in the midst of the confusion a gunshot went off, that forced the British to attack. They British won because the colonists fled. 49 colonists were killed and 73 were killed for the British.
  • Ticonderoga

    This is the first battle out of three. The Green Mountain Boys were taking over the fort for the patriots. They were sneaking across the river during the night but when sun fall came only half were across. So, they decided to attack. There were only one guard on duty and he ran away when the musket misfired, so they took the fort. The main reason for them to take the fort was to get control of its cannons. The Americans won because they took over the fort. No one was kill in the attack.
  • The Second Continental Congress

    The decisions that were made in the Congress were: Forming an army to fight the British, printing its own money, and getting loan. They established the Continental Army.
  • Bunker HIll

    Boston was being besieged by thousands of American militia and the British were trying to keep control of the city and control its valuable sea ports. The British decided to take two hills to gain a tactical advantage. American forces heard about it and they went to defend the hills. When the British realized what happened they attacked. The Americans fought back but they run out of ammunition so they retreated. They British won because they retreated. 226 British died and 145 American died.
  • Quebec

    Patriot forces attempted to capture the British city of Quebec. The attack failed. The battle was the first major defeat of the Revolutionary War for the Americans. The British won. 20 British were killed and around 500 Americans were killed.
  • Long Island

    The British were forced out of Boston and Washington knew they would soon return. So, they started preparing to defend the city. They were focused on the smaller attack and the main force of British army attacked and nearly surrounding the Americans. So the Americans had to retreated but they didn't want to lose a lot of people. The British won because the Americans had retreated. 300 Americans were killed and 377 British were killed.
  • Fort Washington

    The Hessian and the Redcoats wanted to siege Fort Washington. The Patriots were overwhelmed and they surrendered. The Hessians took the valuable ammunition and supplies. The British won because the Patriots surrendered. 84 American were killed and 59 British were killed.
  • Trenton

    Washington and his army arrived in Trenton. The Hessians were not prepared for such an attack so they soon surrendered. The Americans won because the Hessians surrendered. 22 Hessians died and 2 Americans died.
  • Ticonderoga 2

    This is the second battle of three. The British attack Ticonderoga with 8,000 soldiers. Ticonderoga was vulnerable to an attack from the high ground of Mount Defiance . So, they began to surround the fort from atop of the mountain. St. Clair saw them and knew they had no chance to keep the fort, so they retreated and gave up the fort to the British. The British won because the colonists retreated. No one died in this battle.
  • Brandywine

    The British launch a full-scale attack on General George Washington and the Patriot. The British spilt up into two separate divisions. The dense fog had provided the British troops with cover. The Americas were unaware that they split up and we caught of guard by the attack. The British won because the Americans retreated. 300 Americans were killed and 89 British were killed
  • Ticonderoga 3

    This was the last battle out of the three. Colonel John Brown and 500 men attempted to take back the fort but they were unable. But they did manage to rescue 118 American prisoners while capturing 293 British troops. The fort was held by the British for the rest of the war. It was abandoned after the surrender at Yorktown. The British won because the Americans did not take the fort back. No one died in the battle.
  • Saratoga

    There were a series of battles that culminated in the Battle of Saratoga. The British General Burgoyne had an plan to defeat the American colonies which was that he would split the colonies in two along the Hudson River. He was sure that the colonies could not stand if they were divided. They recaptured Fort Ticonderoga and headed march south. General Howe heading east to take Philadelphia, he was on his own. The Americans won. 90 American died and 440 British died.
  • Cowpens

    This battle was the truing point of the Revluionary War in the southern colonies. The Daniel Morgan set up his defense in three lines. The front line had around 150 riflemen to shoot at the British officers and then retreat. Second line was 300 militianmen and the third line held the main force. Morgan's plan worked. The Americans won because the British retreated. 110 British were killed and 12 Americans were killed.
  • Yorktown

    Yorktown was the last great battle of the American Revolutionary War. The British Army surrendered and the British government began to consider a peace treaty. 25 Americans were killed and 110 British were killed.
