    During the winter of Valley Forge the American troops were under a great transformation, even getting hit by the cruel cold of the winter. Friedrich Von Steuben, a Prussian captain and talented drillmaster, volunteered to serve George Washington and turned his men into high quality soldiers and a strong force. Around the same time, another military leader names Marquis de Lafayette joined the staff at Valley Forge. He helped George and lobbied for French reinforcements in 1779.

    After smashing American forces at Camden, South Carolina in August the British had forces all across the state. However, when Cornwallis marched north, American forces attacked and cut off British communication which made Cornwallis retreat.

    A French army of 6,000 had landed in Newport, Rhode Island which favored the patriots because Lafayette just heard of Cornwallis plan to build a fort in York Town and try to take over Virginia. Lafayette suggested the French and American forces join together with the two French Fleets and attack the British.

    The Americans defeated the British at Cowpens, South Carolina. The British expected no fight after knowing of how much they outnumbered the Americans. The Americans fought and it was too much for Tarleton which led to him surrendered.
