    Abraham Lincoln

    Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed in Ford Theater while being on a small vacation. Shortly After being killed Andrew Johnson (vice president) becomes president. The significance of this is that Lincoln ended slavery.
  • 13th Amendment

    13th Amendment
    13th amendment approved in January, and ratified in December. It abolishes slavery. This was significant because it brought equality to African Americans after the Civil War.
  • 14th amendment

    14th amendment
    The 14th amendment was passed in 1866, but it was ratified in 1868. Entitles all people to equal protection under the laws of the United States. Gives African Americans and slaves who had been emancipated after the Civil War.
  • Ulysses S. Grant

    Ulysses S. Grant
    Former Union General, Ulysses Grant, becomes president. Although he allied with the Radical Republicans he did not show great leadership. Especially during Reconstruction.
  • Pinchback

    Pinchback
    Pinchback was an acting governor from December of 1872 to January of 1873. he later became the first African American to serve a state governor. Due to white resistance his term did not last very long. This is significant because it's being shown that African Americans have more freedom, but also that the whites were still not happy with it.
  • Blanche K. Bruce

    Blanche K. Bruce
    Bruce was the first African American elected to senate to serve a full term. He represented Mississippi. His significance was that he became apart of the senate during Reconstruction.
  • Against Pinchback

    Against Pinchback
    After Pinchback was an acting governor for a while he was voted to not be seated in the senate. This is significant because it happened during the Reconstruction and he was a African American.
  • Forty-Fifth Congress

    Forty-Fifth Congress
    There were four African American members in the house at this time. The forty-fifth congress was a meeting but during this meeting there were African Americans included. This is significant because Reconstruction was going somewhere.
