    Miners wanted higher wages and shorter work days. The strikers threatened to shut down the winter fuel supplies to the major cities. President Theodore Roosevelt got involved and ended up suspending the strike. Workers ended up getting a 10% pay increase and only worked for 9 hours instead of 10.
