  • Coal Strike of 1902

    Workers strike for 3 days on higher wages and less working hours. This event falls under creating economic reform because the workers are trying to get their compensation from big business owners like Andrew Carnegie.

  • Newlands Reclamation Act

    A United States federal law that funded irrigation projects for the arid lands of 20 states in the American West. The act at first covered only 13 of the western states as Texas had no federal lands. This falls under the goal of protecting social welfare.

  • Department of Commerce and Labor

    The purpose of the Department of Commerce and Labor is to promote and develop the well being of the wage earners, job seekers, and retirees of the United States and improve working conditions. This falls under the goal of promoting moral improvement because it's all about improving peoples lives and keeping them safer.

  • Northern Securities v. United States

    A case heard by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1903. The Court ruled 5 to 4 against the stockholders of the Great Northern and Northern Pacific railroad companies, who had essentially formed a monopoly, and to dissolve the Northern Securities Company. This falls under the goal of creating economic reform.

    A series of significant consumer protection laws enacted by congress in the 20th century led to the food and drug administration. The purpose of this was to ban foreign or mislabeled food and drug products. This falls under the goal of protecting social welfare because it would keep people safe and healthy by having accurate labels.

  • Meat Inspection Act

    American law that makes it a crime to adulterate or misbrand meat and meat products being sold as food, and ensures that meat and meat products are slaughtered and processed under sanitary conditions. This falls under the goal of protecting social welfare because it involved inspection of the factories and meats.

  • Bureau of Mines

    The Bureau of Mines was the primary United States government agency conducting scientific research and disseminating information on the extraction, processing, use, and conservation of mineral resources. This falls under the goal of fostering efficiency because they were finding new ways to use more resources.

  • Children's Bureau

    A federal agency organized under the United States Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families. Today, the bureau's operations involve improving child abuse prevention, foster care, and adoption.
