First Date of the Mother’s Last Menstrual Period
The first 2 weeks of the mother's menstrual cycle. She has her period. 2 weeks later, an egg is released from your ovary, called ovulation.
  • When Conception/Fertilization Occurs

    When Conception/Fertilization Occurs
After the egg is released, it travels down the fallopian tube to the uterus, and combines with the sperm. This is the process of fertilization.
  • When the Zygotic Stage of Development Begins

When the Zygotic Stage of Development Begins
Cell division starts about 24-36 hours after conception. It reaches the uterus about 3-4 days after fertilization. The divided cells form a ball, which floats around the uterus for 2-3 days. The ball of cells then attaches to the lining of the uterus(Implantation), takes 3-4 days to complete.
  • Week 4

    Week 4
The embryo is tinier than a grain of rice. Rapidly dividing cells are starting to form various body systems, including the digestive system.
  • Embryonic Stage of Development Begins

    Embryonic Stage of Development Begins
Starts week 6. Many major parts begin to develop, including: the heart, arms and legs, the neural tube, and many more. This stage especially plays an important role in the development of the brain.
  • The Heart is Now Beating

    The Heart is Now Beating
Week 7. As well as this, the placenta and amniotic sac begins to develop with the embryo. More specifically, the placenta burrows into the uterine wall to get oxygen/nutrients from the mom's blood.
  • The Embryo Develops Into a Fetus

The Embryo Develops Into a Fetus
