    This started when the U.S. dropped the atomic bomb on Japan. Russia soon became an enemy rather than a ally to the United States and continued to try to one up the U.S. with creating weapons, which eventually led to the Cuban Missile Crisis and Cold War.

    The Truman Doctrine was established by president Harry Truman and stated that the United States would provide aid politically, militarily, and economically to countries that were being threated by communism.
  • Cold War(1947-1991)

    Cold War(1947-1991)
    The Cold War was a war between the Russian and the United States primarily, but each of them had allies. It all started not long after the second world war had ended because communist was spreading and the U.S. wanted to stop it, while Russia supported it. Neither sides fought full out, but both super powers were ready for a full out nuclear war, if needed.

    This goes along with the lines of the Truman Doctrine and is just the aid that America gave Western Europe. They gave a total of 13 billion to support them economically to rebuild after the second world war.

    This was a creation of an alliance for western nations that were against communism. The United States and eleven other countries joined while the Soviets and their allies made the Warsaw Pact.
  • Korean War (1950-1953)

    This began when Korea divided into North and South. The United States went to aid the South and prevent them from falling to Communism. The Chinese and Soviets aided the North.
  • Vietnam War (1955-975)

    The United States showed up to help unify Vietnam. The only reason we got involved was to help South Vietnam from falling to Communism which went along with the Policy of Containment. The war was not supported by Americans at home.

    The Sputnik was launched by the Soviet Union. It changed a lot of things because it was the first artificial satellite to go up into space. The United States were very surprised and then tried to compete with them which is how the Space Race began.

    The Bay of Pigs Invasion was a failed attempt to attack and overthrow Fidel Castro. He was the leader of Cuba and a concern of the United States since he had gained power in 1959.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis (1962)

    Cuban Missile Crisis (1962)
    This lasted 13 days between Russia and the United States. It all began because Russia placed missiles in Cuba, which is only ninety miles from the Unites States. The U.S. placed a blockade around Cuba and made it very clear that they would use military force if needed. Lots of people feared nuclear war, but Russia then offered to take the missiles out of Cuba as long as America did not invade it.
