  • I was born into a Family - Personal

I was born into a Family - Personal
It may seem obvious why this was selected, but I think it was important to note that I was born into a family. Everyone is born, but not all are born into a family. That helped shape my context.

    My Life

  • Moved to Orlando, Fl - Personal

Altough I was too young to remember the initial move, much of my life has been a series of asking questions about what home means. As such, I feel less gounded than perhaps others do. I also have a desire to move around and get to know other cities and invest in those places as well.
  • Graduated from High School - Professional

Graduating from high school allowed me to enter a world with possibilities. It wasn't until my last few months of High School that I decided to continue my education. That's when I had a teacher that invested in me, and I knew that I would want to invest in others that way.
  • Took my first Education Class - Professional

Once upon a time I wanted to be a High School social studies teacher. In order to get accepeted into my undergraduates teacher ed program I had to take Sociology of Education. This course was amazing, but also depressing. This is the first time I was introduced to the ideas of social mobility, and I learned that no matter how hard I try I will never have access to a higher social status. So, I loved the course, but decided not to be a teacher because I thought "what would it matter?"
  • Donated a Kidney - Personal

    Donated a Kidney - Personal
I donated a kidney to a dying friend. It was a pivotal moment in my life, because this represents the first time I put others before myself.
  • Interned at Schools and Orphanages in Malawi - Professional

I was given the oppertunity to spend the summer in Malawi working with children who were orphanes or impoverished. I spent most of my days with children aged 1 to 9 in and out of school. It was amazing to live and work right next to them, them teaching me and me teaching them.
  • Graduated from Undergraduate Program - Professional

This represents being the first one in my family to graduate from college. It was a day I never thought would come. I always thought that I would either fail or get kicked out. An education is something that I felt and sometimes feel like I have a limited access to. It's a world that's foreign to me still. But, I tried to persevere, and it paid off.
  • Ran for Public Office - Personal

Ran for Public Office - Personal
I have always been a seeker. It's hard for me to know what the right thing to do is. But, when I realized that my county comissioner was going to run unopposed, I decided that my neighbors needed a choice. So, for several months I walked the streets going door to door talking to my neighbors about their concerns and desires. I didn't end up winning the election, but I did gain the confidence and support of 555 voters (33% of voters).
  • Helped start a non-profit called "The Art Bus Project" - Personal

When I lived in Charleston, SC, I fell in love with the idea that art can change the world. I was connected to a few visionaries and artists, as well as inner city ministers, and fell in love with the idea of converting a school bus into a mobile art studio. So, as a summer project I flew up with a group to NYC to retrieve some buses that had been donated; and spent the rest of the summer converting it into an art studio. It's still doing great things today.
  • Started M.A.T. Program - Professional

Coming out of many good conversations. I decided that my passion is children, and I have enough interet and curiosity to try to work in the field of education. Even though I am freightened and insecure, I plan to persever until I can facilitate meaningful experiences for children to learn and grow.
