  • Baggataway

    Games such as Baggataway was used during this time period as a way to settle disputes between rivaling tribes.
  • Curriculum

    During this time Physical Education and sport was not in the curriculum of schools, it was thought of taking away effort from class and the effort given in the classroom.
  • Physical Education Begins

    In the 1820s and 30s physical education was finally beginning to start to be incorporated into schools curriculum but it was just for men.
  • Turnfest

    In 1851 the very first ever national turnfest was held, this is a very large running event that is held almost like the Olympics.
  • Intercollegiate Competition

    In 1852 the first ever intercollegiate competition occurred and it was a crew race between Harvard and Yale with Harvard winning the competition.
  • State Requirement

    California was the first state to require schools to offer physical education in 1866. Ohio was the next state to require physical education in 1892
  • National Education Association

    In 1881 the National Education Association finally recognized Physical Education as a curricular area of study. Allowing schools and students to take part in physical education as part of the schooling.
  • New Physical Education

    In 1893 at the International Conference of Education wood presented a vision for new physical education. This was to tune to the relationship of physical training to completed education. To make the effort to make physical contribution its full share to the life of the individual, in environment training and culture.
  • Education and Athletics

    In 1895 the intercollegiate conference of faculty representatives was formed. Compromising seven institutes to establish requirements for students pertaining to enrollment and academic performance. This was later founded as the Big Ten which was also the forerunner of other conferences being formed down the road.
  • First Olympics

    In 1896 the very first modern olympics that we know of today was held. This was held in Athens which was including 28 events throughout 4 different sports.
  • Four Objectives of Physical Education

    In 1910 Hetherington articulated the four objectives of physical education. Organic development or fitness, psychomotor development or skill, character development or social, and intellectual development or mental.
  • Selective Service

    In 1917 the selective service act was passed. This act called all men between the ages of 18-25 to go into the armed service where it was later found out that one third of the men that was called in where found to be physically unfit.
  • Scientific Basis of Physical Education

    In the 1920s and 30s marked a time where scientific basis had an growing emphasis. Measurement was used as a means of grouping students, assessing achievements, prescribing exercises, and motivating performance.
  • Degrees in Physical Education

    In 1924 the Teachers College of Columbia University and New York University offered the first doctoral degrees in physical education. Others programs across the country was soon to follow and grow to this as well
  • Doing Away with Physical Education

    Between 1932 and 1934 an estimated 40% of the physical education programs were dropped completely. Legislative moves were made in serval states to do away with the physical education requirements.
  • Intercollegiate Basketball

    In 1940 the national association of intercollegiate basketball was created. This was created to provide smaller school the availability to compete in intercollegiate athletics
  • NATA

    In 1950 the National Athletic Trainers Association was founded. This was a way of promoting participation of girls and women in competitive sports at both the high school and collegians level.
  • Minimal Muscular Fitness Test

    This article was published in 1953 showing that 60% of children in the United States have failed the test. The European children that took place in the same test was surprising only 9% failure rate.
  • ACSM

    In 1954 a group of 11 physicians founded the American College of Sports Medicine. As sports and physical activity was continually growing teachers and coaches started taking part in becoming athletic trainers for their teams.
  • Lifetime Sport Foundation

    In 1965 the lifetime sport foundation was founded. This was instrumental in providing leadership in the area of sport. This also provided a greater emphasis on teachers to include activities such as bowling, tennis, golf, and badminton.
