    Plessy v Ferguson
    Homer Plessy was placed in jail after he sat in the white section of a train. The court decided that the 14th amendment did not protect the social rights of people furthermore, Plessy had no right to sit in a white section. This court case did not have much importance because the Jim Crow Laws were being enforced in this time period and it was obvious he was not going to win the case.

    Brown v Board of Education56y
    Several complaints were filed against segregation in public schools.The court ruled this segregation illegal and forced for integration.This case overruled the Plessy v Ferguson case and began desegragation.
  • Murder of Emmett Till

    Murder of Emmett Till
    Emmett Till,a black teenager, was shot and killed by a white for allegedly whistling at a white woman with no proof. This case gained a lot of popularity as it contributed to the civil rights movement. This was important as it highlighted the privilege that white people hold.
  • Rosa Parks & the Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Rosa Parks & the Montgomery Bus Boycott
    Rosa Parks, an African American woman, was arrested for resisting against giving her seat up to a white man.This situation is very well known because it led to Bus Boycotts. This is important because more african americans united and rose against segregation.

    Founding of Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) & Martin Luther King
    The Founding of Southern Christian Leadership Conference consisted of MLK,Charles K, Steele and Fred L. Shuttlesworth.This conference was a civil rights organization that stood with non-violence and MLK was the president of it. It is very important because it supported non-violence behaviors which was refreshing among all of the violence occuring in the world.
  • Little Rock Nine & Central High School

    Little Rock Nine & Central High School
    Little Rock Nine & Central High School was a situation where 9 black students were prohibited from entering Central High in Arkansa because of the governors orders. However, President Eisenhower threated to sent federal troops if the students were not allowed in. This was pivotal because the Brown v Board of Education case was enforced.
  • Greensboro Sit-In

    Greensboro Sit-In
    Four black students sat in the white side of Woolworth lunch which was called a sit- in as they sat for hours protesting segregation. Eventhough the white people were the ones attacking the blacks the black students were the ones that got arrested. This non-violent protest was important because it victimized black people which made those who saw the news feel sympathy and joined the movement.
  • Freedom Ride/Freedom Riders

    Freedom Ride/Freedom Riders
    The freedom riders were a group of people who felt they needed to end the Jim Crow Laws. They went to the south to ensure the supreme court enforced their decision. This is important because white people were part of this and it showed unity among whites and blacks.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    This march was one of the biggest marches led by MLK as he gave his notorious speech " I have a Dream".More than 250,000 people attended and thousands tuned in as it was televised. This is important as people in other states were able to hear and see unity being created in America.

    The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) & Freedom Summer project was made to push black people to vote.People like the freedom riders encouraged blacks to vote even though it angered whites.This is important because it demonstrates the drive that civil rights activist had.

    The civil rights act prohibited any form of segregation. Desegregation was enforced immediately even though it did not make whites content. This is important because it was a turning point in the civil rights movement.

    Assassination of Malcolm X
    The assassination of Malcolm X was a huge deal as he was one of the most recognized activist for civil rights. His philosophy was to use violence if necessary and wanted separate but equal black and white communities. This was an important event because it gave MLK more light in his non violent approach.

    This made it easier for black people to vote as before there was a tax based on race.Eliminating the tax helped more people vote.This gave more voice to minorities as they became more comfortable with the idea of voting.

    The assasination of MLK was very controversial as he was shot .Black people were devastated as he was their voice and chance to change as he worked hard for equality.This was important because it made the black community stronger as they united even more.
