    This is when British pop emerged genres came, although, it has changed a lot since then. Skiffle was a popular genre of music at the time. It was a British remake of American jazz, blues and folk music. One of the most famous skiffle songwriters, Lonnie Donegan, was known as the 'King of Skiffle'.

    During this decade two key styles of music were found. These were beat music and British blues. Beat music is made of bands with mostly guitars and catchy tunes. These include The Beatles and The Klinks. British blues was a new form of American blues using electric guitars. Artists include Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and Fleetwood Mac.

    In this decade, lots of rock genres came to Britain. These include folk rock, psychedelic rock, glam rock, punk and ska. Folk rock is louder combined with acoustic traditions (not producing music electronically). Psychedelic rock is adding sounds to rock music. Glam rock (also known as glitter rock) is more flashy, with performers wearing make-up and colourful costumes. Punk is described to be aggressive and rough, and came with a style of studded, dark clothing.Ska is rock influenced by reggae.

    During the 1980’s more music was made using electronic music technology which led to some new genres of pop music being established. This included synth pop, which uses keyboards and drum machines. House and hip-hop music were introduced to Britain during this decade. Key artists in hip hop include Rodney.P and Cookie Crew. House music also originated in the USA and key artists include The Beatmasters and Yazz.

    During the 1990’s more bands were created. These include boy bands and girl groups. Examples of these are Take That and the Spice Girls. Britpop became more popular during this period.

    During the 21st century there are a lot of successful artists that use different varieties of pop. UK grime also emerged with lots of leading rap artists such as Stormzy. There are famous British artists such as Ed Sheeran and Ellie Goulding and they are recognised all over the world. The BRIT Awards also play a part in celebrating and promoting British artists nowadays.
