Music through the Eras

  • Phonographs took Center Stage

    Instead of depending on the piano for entertainment, recordings on phonographs allowed anyone to savour music from the comfort of his or her home. This resulted in new markets in the music industry as well as its expansion.

    Jazz Music Emerged

    This new genre of music was known as "shocking" and "daring" by many, and has a unique African beat that was developed by Black musicians in the mid-west, south, and east. This genre of music, together with the "Blues", another African-derived art form, helped transform music. These genres received the label of "race music", the genre "rhythm and blues" was later attributed to the Black community. Meanwhile, what was considered as "pop" was references to white people.

    Music Genres blend to become "rock and roll"

    The industry continued to grow and soon enough the barriers between races blurred. Those considered as "pop" musicians started borrowing rhythms from jazz and blues musicians. This gave birth to the genre known as "rock and roll".

    Sheet Music Began to be Published

    Many people start turning to their pianos for entertainment. Sheet music for popular songs became a phenomenon throughout the country. The music publishing industry also began during this timespan.
  • Dominant Sevenths Chords found in Jazz and Blues music starts to die out.

  • Invasion of British Bands introduced a radical new rocky sound.

    Invasions of British bands such as the Beatles to the Rolling Stones introduced a new sound. Researchers say this was the first of three stylistic revolutions.
  • Minor Seventh Chords were introduced through funk, soul and disco music.

    This event didn't cause a revolution necessarily, but these chords were not present before and they haven't gone away since. New songs still heavily use these chords.

    Pop music diversifies into Acid Rock, Disco, Techno, Dance and Rap.

    Rap Music/Hip Hop, started in the 1980s. For more than 25 years already, this genre of music has outsold Gospel, Country, Rock, R&B and even Jazz. Today, Rap ranks second to pop when it comes to appeal, marketability and profits. This genre has produced such stars as Eminem, Pink, Beck, Rage against the Machine, and others.
  • Introduction of Arena Rock

    The introduction of this genre in the 1980s meant that, for a while, music lacked diversity. "A lot of hair metal and stadium rock, like Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen, came into the charts, and they had a bigger share of the overall charts. But then rap and hip-hop came in. I think that hip-hop saved the charts." - Dr Matthias Mauch, Queen Mary University of London.

    NEw technology, synthesisers, samplers and drum machines drove a second major style shift in 1983.

    Pop Music Today and Beyond

    There has been the birth of a lot more genres of pop-music today such as; Post-Grunge, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Pop Punk, Electronic Music, K-Pop and other genres of pop-music that continues to be a huge part of culture.
  • Third Major Style Shift

    Rap music and hip-hop went mainstream. The emphasis in this genre is on speech bounds and rhythm considering the majority of rap music doesn't use a lot of harmony.
