Music Through China

  • Period: 221 BCE to 206 BCE

    Qin Dynasty

    Music started to develop. And The Imperial Music Bureau was created. It was an organization, which united musical practices throughout China and organized the folk songs into court and military music.
  • Period: 206 BCE to 220

    Han Dynasty

    The Imperial Music Bureau was expanded and it continued through different forms throughout the Dynastic Era, which is known as the Golden Age of China. Also, the emperor and the bureaucracy worked together to expand the artistic and religious culture of China.
  • Period: 220 to 280

    The Three Kingdoms: 220-280 AD

    During this period, the Silk Road was more widely used, because of this it allowed the once-isolated China to be exposed even further to the musical practices of other cultures.
  • Period: 265 to 618

    Jin Dynasty: (265-420 CE) & Sui Dynasty (581-618 CE)

    Chinese music continued to expand through both the government and trade.
  • Period: 618 to 906

    Tang Dynasty: 618–906 C.E.

    In the Tang Dynasty many new instruments became essential to traditional Chinese music.

    Ming Dynasty:(1368–1644) & Qing Dynasty: (r. 1644–1911):

    During both these dynasties, the art of traditional opera developed fast and diversely in different regions. When these distinctive opera styles were performed at the capital (now, Beijing), artists combined the essence of the different styles and created Beijing opera.

    C- Pop (Chinese Pop) has become big. It includes elements of jazz, rock, soul and electronic music. It's become widely popular in the recent years.
