  • The Battle of Galveston

    • a Union warship came to the Galveston coast and began a blockade, preventing supplies from entering Galveston and forcing the current island occupants to surrender.
    • Texas developed a plan to take back Galveston by creating two warships named Neptune and Bayou City.
    • After Neptune sank and Bayou City captured a Union ship, the rest of the Union surrendered and Texas regained controll of Galveston for the rest of the war.

  • The Battle of Sabine Pass

    • Union leaders made plans to invade TX through the Sabine Pass. They started by taking down the fort that protected the pass which was only guarded by about 40 men.
    • Union ships shot at the fort with cannons.
    • The Union then became in shooting range of the Confederates and were taken down. Some retreated and about 300 were captured.
  • Battle of Laredo

    -Union soldiers wanted to storm Laredo and burn its store of cotton.
    - When the battle began Colonel Santos Benavides and his troops fought the Union off.
    - Benavides said that the vigorous fire of his gallant men is what drove the Union off.
  • Red River Campaign

    • Union troops planned to move up the Red River into Louisiana and to Texas in hope to destroy the Confederate factories at Henderson, Marshall, and Tyler.
    • The Confederate forces defeated Banks's forces when they fought the battle of Mansfield.
    • Banks fought Taylor at Pleasant Hill, which was the largest battle west of the Mississpippi River.
  • Battle of Palmito Ranch

    • Final Battle of the American Civil War.
    • After two attacks from Barret, Ford and his determined troops fought back.
    • Ford kept attcking until the Union surrendered, making this battle a confederate victory.
