Mars Missions

  • Viking 1

    Viking 1
The USA’s first spacecraft to land safely on the surface of mars and send back images of the surface. It helped show mars was a cold planet. found volcanic soil. a thin carbon dioxide atmosphere. evidence of ancient river beds and flooding. Dug trenches in the soil and discovered. material different to any other found on earth. Determined the surface of mars was similar to wet sand.
  • Mars Global surveyor

    Mars Global surveyor
Was a way to communicate with earth and see rovers from up above. Found evidence of red liquid like water near the surface of mars. Temperature data. Close up images of the Martian moon Phobos. New boulder. Recently formed craters
  • Mars Pathfinder

    Mars Pathfinder
It was the first ever robotic rover to be sent to the mar surface. It returned 2.3 billion bits of information. took more than 16.500 images from the lander. 550 images from the rover. more than 15 chemical analyses of rocks and info on winds. Found evidence that suggests mars was once warm and wet. Discovered the air born dust was magnetic.
  • Mars Express

    Mars Express
It was the European Space Agency’s first spacecraft to go to another planet in the solar system. Discovering evidence of recent glacial activity. explosive volcanism. methane gas. Buried impact craters. Hints of deep underground water ice. Found the highest clouds ever seen above any planet surface at 100 km.
  • Spirit

    Spirit
It lasted 25 times longer than it was estimated to last. It got some soil and found 90 percent pure silica at home plate suggesting ancient microbes. Found rocks 10 times richer in chemicals then any other martin rocks found before. Salty water on mars long ago. Evidence of a once hot environment. Found craters and learned how they erode through time. Learnt how solar energy works on mars.
